If you don't like buying things online and want to walk into a physical shop and you live in or around Austin, Texas, you have a few options.

OPTIONS:
Medusa Skate Shop is the only fully dedicated roller skating shop in Austin as of August 2022. They are located just south of where the 1 and 183 meet. Their staff is versed mostly in recreational, derby and park skating, but they carry skates that will work great for most skating styles.
Playland Skate Center is a roller rink located in North Austin near the 183. They carry a limited selection of newbie and beginner level skates, but will also be able to order skates from brand catalogues for you.
Austin Roller Rink is a roller rink located in South Austin on of Manchaca Rd. They carry a limited selection of newbie and beginner level skates, but will also be able to order skates from brand catalogues for you.
TIPS:
If you are buying roller skates for a child, you may be able to pick up skates at stores like Target or Dick's Sporting Goods. The skates from stores like this are good for beginner skaters, but not the best for more advances skaters.
At Ignite On Wheels, we typically suggest skaters get high-top skates with a heel, especially if you are an adult skater. The high-top boots provide ankle support and the heel helps place your body weight over the ball of your feet. These types of skates are also ideal for skaters taking classes with our School of Skating.
That said, if you are interested in doing things like floorwork, derby, or speed, low tops might be a better option for you.
While you are at the skate shop ask about:
toe-stops vs. toe-plugs
better bushings/cushions
checking wheel tightness
safety gear
indoor vs. outdoor wheels
Hope this is helpful! Have fun shopping!
If you would like to take roller skating classes or private lessons, check out our School of Skating.
